The new method is based on the Probability of Death Score which provides a routine means of assigning a specific probability of death to each trauma victim. The individual probabilities of death can be summed over a group to calculate the total expected deaths in the group. Likewise, the individual probabilities of death can be combined with standard demographic data to calculate expected person years lost.
