AbstractTWO ARTICLES by McDermott and Hughes, published in this issue of the Journal (page 606 and page 609), draw attention to the high frequency of alcohol intoxication among driver casualties who received treatment in public hospitals in Victoria. The corresponding frequency among the general driving population is much lower.' The authors provide substantial confirmation of the previously noted variations by sex of driver and by time of day and day of week in the extent of alcohol involvement in road accident casualties. They also document the particularly hazardous combination of alcohol and inexperience in driving.
