Abstract	The 1,350 pages of the reports on the Adelaide In-Depth Accident Study show how many and varied are the factors that cause accidents and injuries in the Adelaide metropolitan area alone. Similarly, there are thousands of possible ways in which we could try to prevent road accidents happening or to stop people being killed on injured in a crash. What we have done here is to present just a few examples of road safety measures that are known to be effective. Most of them are well known, but this highlights one of the problems that we must overcome: how to make sure that full use is made of known safety measures. One example is given of a relatively new accident countermeasure, one that halves the frequency of rear-end collisions. A more general, and more extensive review of policy options for reducing the motor vehicle crash injury cost burden has been prepared by the Washington-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (copy enclosed).
