DRIVER FATIGUE: WHAT IS IT? There is a wide range of opinions on the nature and importance of driver fatigue in terms of road safety. It has been said that: There is no clear definition of fatigue, We don't know how common it is, or how it relates to crash risk, and there are no apparently successful countermeasures. (Saffron, 1998) On the other hand there are some who don't share these views. For example, Brice and Smith (2000) appear to have no doubt that "Research has identified that the primary cause of road accidents is fatigue." In this paper I will review some of the research evidence, and some less well substantiated opinions, on current and emerging issues in relation to driver fatigue and road safety. | Sponsor | National Roads and Motorists Association | Conference Name | Driver Fatigue Conference: Issues, Causes and Countermeasures | Conference Location | Sydney, Australia | Conference Date | 30 October 2001 | Page Range | 8-17 | Page Count | 10 | Notes | available from CASR library on request |
