TitleThe hazards of utility poles
AuthorsMcLean AJ
Year1994
TypeJournal Article
AbstractTo the Editor: The hazardous nature of utility poles at the roadside has been recognised for many years.' There is now increasing interest in the replacement of pole-mounted overhead wires with underground cables in the electricity distribution network. However, this interest reflects environmental rather than safety concerns. For example, in 1990 the South Australian Government established the Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC) to "improve the aesthetics of the electricity distribution system for the benefit of the general community, primarily through the undergrounding of electricity mains". The purpose of this letter is to draw attention to the safety benefits which are likely to result from the undergrounding of power lines by documenting the continuing casualties associated with collisions with utility poles in the Adelaide area.
