TitleEvaluation of RJAWS Lite at crossroad intersections in Onkaparinga City Council
AuthorsMongiardini M, Stokes CS
Year2025
TypeReport
AbstractThe effectiveness and safety benefits of the RJAWS Lite installed at five sites across McLaren Vale were evaluated. This system advises major road vehicles to slow down when they are approaching the intersection if minor road traffic is present. Additionally, it provides a visual warning to motorists on the minor road whenever they are detected to approach the intersection at an unsafe speed.

A controlled before-after approach based on the observed speed variations was adopted to evaluate the system effectiveness at inducing traffic calming on the major road. The resulting variation in the risk of casualty crashes was also evaluated. Additionally, the effectiveness at deterring run-through events was investigated using speed profiles along the intersection minor legs. Speed was measured at each of the five treated intersections before as well as after the RJAWS Lite was activated. Speed was also monitored at untreated intersections, which were specifically paired to each of the treated sites and served as a control during the evaluation.

After accounting for the control, the average speed reductions induced by the RJAWS Lite flashing signs on the major approaches varied between 4.1 km/h and 8.3 km/h and the predicted reduction in the risk of FSI crashes varied from 5% and 43%. These risk reductions are consistent with what reported in a previous trial of the RJAWS Lite at T-junctions. Streamlined electronic signage adopted at four of the five sites in this evaluation provided better results than the large static sign with overhead flashing beacon lights used at the first evaluation site.
