AbstractModern vehicles are fitted with Event Data Recorders (EDRs) to constantly record variables such as speed, seat belt usage, accelerator pedal status, brake pedal status, and delta-v. When a crash occurs, a snapshot of the final few seconds of these variables, as well as the activations of safety systems, are saved on the EDR. In 2017, CASR established a data collection process whereby many crash-involved vehicles could be accessed regularly from a single location (an auction yard) and the EDR data downloaded. Additionally, the South Australian Police Major Crash Investigation Section (MCIS) provided EDR data to CASR, downloaded from vehicles involved in investigated serious crashes. In 2024, CASR successfully retrieved EDR data from 104 crashed vehicles, of which 84 (80.7%) had an associated police vehicle collision report. This collection has contributed to a current total of 1,139 EDR records from South Australia, with 850 matched to police reports and 376 injured occupants matched to hospital injury data. In the entire sample of cases collected by CASR from the auction yard (from 2017 to 2024), 26.7% of bullet (striking) vehicles, and 42.1% of free speed vehicles were found to be speeding. The rate of seat belt wearing for front seat occupants in the sample was 96.7%. In 2024, two developments took place: the addition of 330 Victorian Police EDR cases to the existing database, and the integration of the Collision Sciences tool, which broadened the range of vehicles accessible for data download.
