Abstract	[letters to the editor] To the Editor: The leading article "To drink but not to drive" confuses a paper by Reznik, Morey and Best with the unpublished report of a campaign produced in 1982 by the Australian Medical Association. The published paper comes to one major conclusion: The number of road traffic accidents in Wollongong fell significantly in the threemonth period following the campaign compared with elsewhere in New South Wales. In reply. - The "one major conclusion" referred to by Reznik et al. is based on the application of a linear model to their data. Simple inspection of the data in the Figure in their paper suggests some alternative conclusions. The variability over preceding years in the frequency of accidents in Wollongong was such that the observed reduction following the campaign could well have occurred by chance, regardless of any comparison with other regions.
