AbstractForty percent of all fatal accidents occurred off the roadway in the U.S.A. in 1980. The situation is likely to be similar in Australia. The relevance of ergonomics to this problem is considered in terms of a driver retaining, or regaining control of the vehicle in the event of it running off the road. In cases where driver control is lost appropriate roadside design can minimize the risk of injury and of property damage by redirecting the vehicle or by modifying certain characteristics of roadside objects.
