AbstractThe current emphasis on reducing motor vehicle fuel consumption as an energy conservation measure is seriously affecting the safety of road transportation. Several areas which are significantly affected are considered in this report. The imposition of lower speed limits has been shown to significantly reduce both accident rates and fuel consumption. Changes in traffic management methods can also affect vehicle safety, for instance the increasing usage of area control of traffic lights is useful as an energy consumption measure without any increases in accident rates however otner measures such as l e f t turn on red can result in a significant increase in the accident rate. The trend to using energy efficient transport such as pedal cycles, mopeds and motorcycles is accompanied by an increased risk of injury in an accident for the user. The downsizing of cars for fuel consumption reasons has serious safety implications for the vehicle occupants both in collisions with other vehicles and with roadside occupants. In addition, the increasing usage of alternative fuels, such as LPG (liquid petroleum gas), has potential safety hazards both during normal use and transportation and in the aftermath to an accident.
