AbstractMany measures aimed at conserving energy in our road transport system have much in common with those aimed at conserving human resources (lives and property). Lower travelling speeds have been shown to save both fuel and lives. Some other energy conservation measures have less desirable effects on road safety. To quote the Administrator

of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States Department of Transportation "Consumers do know when they switch to a small car to double the fuel economy, they may be doubling their risk of death in a crash" (Claybrook, 1980)
