AbstractThis paper discusses the NHMRC Road Accident Research Unit Library and Information Service. It describes how the library services have been diversified to include other functions: increasing the public relations role of the Unit; developing the Library and Information Service on a consultancy basis; overseeing the Unit's publishing process; documenting parliamentary legislation and compiling book indexes. Such enhancements are examples of the principles first identified by St Clair in making a one person library a professionally stimulating Ad rewarding environment. More recently, other authors- have commented that such activities help to raise the profile of the library within the parent organization, and increase job satisfaction. Background information about the Unit and the Library is presented, followed by a brief outline of the Library's resources and services. Extensions to the Library services are described in detail and the benefits of these additional activities are analyzed.
