AbstractThis study investigated driver behaviour and circumstances that led to right-angle crashes at stop and give way sign-controlled intersections. In-depth casualty crashes investigations in South Australia from 2014 to 2023 were analysed. At-fault drivers in 57 right-angle crashes did not statistically significantly differ from at-fault drivers in 375 crashes of other types in testing positive for alcohol or drugs or having passengers. Their vision of the other road user was restricted in 26 crashes. In 33, they slowed or stopped at the intersection before moving into the path of the other road user (16 were looked-but-failed-to-see crashes). In 19, they proceeded straight into the intersection without slowing or stopping, and the most common preceding circumstance for these drivers was that they were unfamiliar with the road (11 crashes). Safety can be improved through superior intersection design and treatments that increase driver awareness of the intersection or reduce crash forces.
