AbstractOver the past seven years, the NH&MRC Road Accident Research Unit has been routinely reconstructing fatal pedestrian-vehicle collisions in order to study the mechanisms of the resulting brain injury. The investigation of real-life injuries complements the use of animal models, human cadavers and mathematical simulations in the development of an understanding of brain injury mechanisms. We have developed a method of estimating the severity of the impact to the head of fatally injured pedestrians, and relating this to the severity and distribution of injury to the brain. This involves the cooperation of the State Coroner, the South Australian Police, and the Tissue Pathology Division of the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS).
