Abstract	Editorial: Thirty years ago we were encouraged to refer to immigrants to Australia as 'New Australians'. In the same era, and following the same terminology, motorcyclists were commonly referred to as 'Temporary Australians'. Since that time both the motorcycle and the pedal cycle have increasingly become used for recreation rather than for reasons of economy, at least by adult users. While both types of cyclist are still at high risk of injury in a crash, the motorcyclist is now the only road user for whom the head is not the most severely injured body region. This, of course, is a consequence of compulsory helmet wearing and of the continuing high risk of severe injury to the lower extremities of motorcycle riders and their pillion passengers.
