There is now increasing interest in the replacement of pole-mounted overhead wires with underground cables in the electricity distribution network. However, this interest reflects environmental rather than safety concerns. For example, in 1990 the South Australian Government established the Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC) to "improve the aesthetics of the electricity distribution system for the benefit of the general community, primarily through the undergrounding of electricity mains".
