TitleThe mechanics and prevention of injuries to the head
AuthorsMcLean AJ
Year1981
TypeBook Chapter
AbstractMost of the cases on which this paper is based have been selected from a study of a representative sample of road traffic accidents to which an ambulance was called in metropolitan Adelaide. The work was funded by the Office of Road Safety of the Commonwealth Department of Transport and by the Australian Road Research Board.* The cases have been chosen to illustrate ways in which the various categories of road users sustain head injuries, and to form a basis for brief discussions of the possibilities for the prevention of such injuries. While the mechanism of injury may often be peculiar to the road traffic accident situation, an attempt has been made to emphasize the basic principles underlying the search for possible preventive measures. These principles are, of course, of more general relevance to the prevention of head injury.
