TitleDevelopment of an effective ambulance patient restraint
AuthorsBest GH, Zivkovic G, Ryan GA
Year1993
TypeJournal Article
AbstractThe safety of fittings in ambulances involved in road accidents has been reviewed in the light of a recently adopted national standard. Concerns about the strength of stretcher hold down brackets led to the development of new brackets which were subjected to crash tests at 48 km/h. The tests revealed other weaknesses and demonstrated the need to consider all parts of the patient restraint system-harness, mattress, stretcher, brackets, and the connection of the brackets to the vehicle. All ambulances in SA are being upgraded to meet the new standard as a matter of urgency. As well, significant changes are being introduced in the areas of driving protocols and patient treatment in order to enhance the safety of crews and patients.
