AbstractTraditionally, developments in road safety have concentrated on the roadworthiness of the vehicle. The standards of roadworthiness which have been achieved in the design and construction of a vehicle are largely the result of the motor vehicle industry's perception of the relevant market forces. Over the past 20 years increasing attention has been paid t o the crashworthiness of the vehicle. The term "crashworthiness" refers to the performance of a vehicle when involved in a crash; in particular, how well the vehicle protects its occupants from injury.
