Abstract	Firstly I would like to thank the Convener of the Conference for inviting me to speak. Social Psychiatry is far from anything that I might choose to call as my speciality, having a background originally in mechanical engineering and later in chronic disease epidemiology. However, some sixteen years ago (I was alarmed to find it was that long ago) while at the School of Public Health at Harvard, I took a course labelled Behavioural Science run by Alexander Leighton (of the Stirling County Study fame). The course, in fact, could better have been labelled "Social Psychiatry" and I would like to begin by quoting the first paragraph that Leighton read to us on the first lecture of the course.
