Databases
If you are a current subscriber to, or member of the Centre's Library
services, please remember that in addition to being able to search the
Library web catalogue we have access to many
online and CD-ROM databases.
In particular, the Library can now search
on a large range of subjects, including medicine, transport, automotive
engineering and
technology using a variety of databases listed below.
Most of the databases provide either bibliographic,
full text or numerical information. At this stage most of the databases
relevant to traffic accident research are bibliographic. They provide
bibliographic details of papers and reports, often with detailed abstracts.
Some provide the full text of these articles.
Some of the databases which are particularly
useful for road accident information and related areas follow.
ATRI
Australian Transport Index (formerly called ROAD).
The database is produced by ARRB Transport
Research Ltd and includes information from 1976 onwards. It indexes and
abstracts items on all aspects of road design and engineering, traffic
and transport planning and regulations, vehicle design, testing and safety,
road safety, driver education, road user behaviour, accident studies,
drink driving and environment, aspects of
economics, administration, computers and communications technology, as
applied to roads and transport. ATRI includes journal articles, reports,
monographs, theses and conference papers, published and unpublished Australian
and overseas publications, the ARRB library catalogue, and other transport
library catalogues in Australia and New Zealand, including the
CASR collection. Items held by the CASR Library are marked as "SRAR" in the LO (location)
field in the database.
TRIS
Transportation Research Information Service.
TRIS is a bibliographic database which provides over 400,000 records of
published transportation research information on air, highway, rail and
maritime transport, mass transport and transportation modes.
Subjects included are traffic accidents, regulations and legislation,
energy, environmental and maintenance technology, traffic
control and communications. The database is compiled by the Transportation
Research Board under the sponsorship of the US
Federal Highway Administration, NHTSA and various other US transport organisations.
There is an extensive coverage of US information, as well as British (particularly
research from the Transport Research Laboratory), some European and
major Australian research. Coverage is from 1968 to present.
Ei-Compendex Plus
This is the online version of 'The Engineering
Index' which provides bibliographic information on the world's significant
literature in engineering and technology. It indexes some 4500 journals
as well as selected government reports and books, including papers from
the Society of Automotive Engineers. Subjects covered included civil,
energy, environmental, automotive and aerospace engineering.
Medline
Medline is a bibliographic database containing
over 3,500,000 references on medical and medical-related topics which
have appeared in over 3500 journals since 1966. The database is compiled
by the US National Library of Medicine. Subjects include
trauma and crash injury biomechanics.
NTIS
National Technical Information Service:
NTIS is a bibliographic database which allows you to locate papers and
reports containing the results of US government-sponsored research, development
and engineering, plus analyses prepared by Federal
agencies, their contractors or grantees. This includes reports from NASA,
DOT and some 600 other agencies. A number of
other countries also contribute to the database, including the Japanese
Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the German Federal Ministry
of Research and Technology. Coverage is from 1964 to the present.
PsycLit
Contains hundreds of thousands of citations,
with abstracts, from international literature in psychology and behavioural
science.
Includes material on communication, cultural and social influences, statistics,
personnel management issues, group and organisational dynamics. This is
one of the few databases which indexes material of relevance to the psychological
and perceptual aspects of driving (eg: vision). Coverage: 1974-
Kinetica
The online national bibliographic database
of material held in Australian libraries. Kinetica is one of the databases
that can assist with tracing items not held in the CASR Library.
Contact the Information Officer at CASR if you would like
an interlibrary loan organised (costs may be involved).

Engineering & Applied Science CD-ROM
This disk is produced by the Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology. It contains eight Australian databases providing
indexes
to journal articles, books, newspaper articles, research reports, theses
and conference proceedings. Some of the databases also include research
in progress. The main subjects covered are engineering and transport,
especially roads. The databases
are updated every six months and include:
ATRI
Australian Transport Index (formerly called ROAD) - available online and
via CD-ROM - described above.
ROADRES
Road Research in Australia. Provides an up-to-date record of research
in roads and related areas, including design, safety.
ENGINE
Australian Engineering Database - Covers all aspects of engineering.
This is mainly an index to Institution of
Engineers, Australia, of publications since 1980.
